“ America is losing its collective mind over coronavirus, and nobody really knows whether it’s justified or not. The U.S. economy is experiencing one of those extraordinary, mind-bending events, fueled by a form of kryptonite that can simultaneously knock down consumers, businesses and investors: fear and uncertainty.” - Link

For some European countries it's already a quite realistic threat, especially Italy with more than 350 corona patients dead as of today.
Predictions are that the economic impact on other countries, like Germany, will be severe.
I think it's like with most of these threats: better safe than sorry. So, while the stock market never really acts rationally and the term panic might apply there, people and governments being alarmed is probably not the worst reaction to the current situation.

But you Americans need not worry as I hear your stable genious really gets it and has a natural ability to know a lot about such things.

It is serious. Look at how it wiped out all those people in that nursing home. I am scared for the elderly and immune compromised.

I would prefer that the US put a ban on air travel and cruises. I believe since we have the ability to do conferences through tech, that the only people who should be allowed to travel in or out of the US would be the health professionals who are helping with this virus and patients. But of course there should be quarantine upon re-entry to the US.

I also do not agree with the common man going out and buying all the masks. The masks are not to prevent you from getting sick, but the prevent the spread of someone sick exposing it to others. Also the everyday person does not know how to use the mask properly. Did you know that the nurses actually get FITTED for their N95 masks?

It is irritating that everyone goes out and buys all the sani wipes because I use them to everyday reasons and the store didn't have any.

People should perhaps just stay home unless they have to go out.

Wash your hands often, and sing Happy Birthday twice while doing so to ensure you are washing long enough.

I saw a video of the wild animals those people ate that caused the virus. The doctor said it was mostly due to the handling of the animals and putting the animals from different areas of the world in the same small, unsanitary places and this all caused the virus. And they banned it in Wuhan but they (the gangs who do the wet market trade) just moved it to other areas of China. And these wet markets are in other parts of the world. I feel bad for the animals. It is nature's revenge.

banning travel is pointless now
it’s here
it spread to my state today and it was one of the few that hadn’t gotten it

all that banning travel would do is further compromise the economy

viruses affect older people and people with poor immune systems no matter what
thankfully this isn’t like other pandemics that also killed you even if you were young and healthy

also please stop calling it the wuhan virus

Why? If it originated in Knoxville, I would call it the Knoxville virus. Covid-19, Coronavirus...whatever. It did originate in Wuhan so Wuhan virus it is!

They actually should have named it Wuhan virus, like how Ebola is named after WHERE it came from! Covid-19. Ha

What a foolish article.

The Wuhan virus. The media is trying their best to blame Trump for it.

Two cases of corona virus have been reported in the city I live in. It’s spreading rapidly. It’s only a matter of time before someone here on YT gets it. It could be me.

The virus is serious matter but not panic matter. You need to put enough ressources in place. While it’s true that flu kills more people (so far), this virus spreads faster and requires hospitalization in way more cases. And some areas don’t have enough hospital beds.

I can link to an interesting article in French. The scale in which these things are measured is called R0.
Basically, it’s how many people would get infected if you put 99 people in a large room with 1 infected person.

Regular flu has a R0 of 1.3
This virus has a R0 of 2.2
For exemple rubella (sp?) has a R0 of 6.

Problems occur if you don’t act quickly. If you treat it like regular flu, after 18 days you have 24 people infected in your 100 people’s room.

I hear it's so bad that after 30 days, you have 135 people infected in your 100 people's room...

I have been calling it that since before it was officially named COVID-19. So habits are hard to break. A lot of viral epidemics are named after where they originated from...such as Ebola, Zika, West Nile...I see nothing wrong with it. When I say the Wuhan virus, everyone knows I am referring to the coronavirus that started in China.

After already having closed schools and kindergardens last week, Italy imposes into total loock-down.
"Shops and restaurants closed, hundreds of flights were canceled and streets emptied across Italy on Tuesday, the first day of an unprecedented, nationwide lockdown imposed to slow Europe’s worst outbreak of coronavirus. [...] Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte unexpectedly expanded the so-called red zone to the entire country on Monday night, introducing the most severe controls on a Western nation since World War Two."

If you really want to stop this thing, drastic measures like this should be taken in every country. However, it’s not going to happen.

The best way to avoid getting it is to stay home. Unfortunately, people have to go to work, because people have to pay their bills. And even if you were well off financially, you would still have to go out to buy essentials like food and toilet paper.

Well, totalitarian regimes like China surely have it easier with that ...

Trump isn't a totalitarian regime?
