I love my vehicle. I've had it since 2008. We made a special, eventful trip up to New York to buy it. And it has always suited my needs. Everything from towing my horse trailer to now packing my children around. It is still running strong BUT the A/C isn't working. Dodge dealership said it is the rear lines leaking. They quoted $2000 to fix it. That was at the end of last summer so I didn't bother fixing it...too close to fall and cool enough weather. So I took it to a small business mechanic about six weeks ago and they could not even charge it. I guess the compressor is out. So that is going to be $600.

Well this vehicle, being the year it is and the miles it has...is not worth more than what these repairs are going to cost. But the vehicle is valuable to ME. But I don't feel it is smart to go forth with the repairs. What would you do if you had a vehicle you liked

that had such expensive repairs that it didn't make sense to do them? The car is operable and I love to drive it. But in the very hot TN summer, I cannot have my children in it. Or myself. Or my husband. It is just too hot. I want to keep the car for winter driving, though. It has taken care of us many times in the snow.

So we are looking into a mini van...a Mom Mobile. The car seats take up a lot of space in the back seat and we like to put our front seats back as far as possible.

We used to have a Prius and loved it until that old idiot totaled it. The gas mileage savings make the car so worth it. And it is pretty roomy inside but I don't know if it is roomy enough for two car seats. It does have the hatch back and that is nice.

I like my 2017 Prius and 2004 Alero. Both get a lot of use. In the year and a half I've had the prius, I've put 25,000 miles on it and still use the Alero in bad weather, when I'll have more than 1 passenger and for grocery shopping.
Back when I was married, we had a dodge mini van that was reliable.

The first thing I’d do is get another opinion on the AC repair. Maybe it’s just the pump and the dealers were trying to screw you. $600 fix might mean it’s worth keeping. Otherwise sell it sooner rather than later. It’s just losing value every day.

I’m so ready for a mini van. Those things are awesome. Even with a large American SUV I can’t get enough leg room to drive with car seats in the back.

That is what we were trying to do, to get a second opinion on the A/C. We took it to a smaller business mechanic and they were going to check the leak but needed to charge it to do so. The compressor is broken so they couldn't even charge it. So we know we'd have to fix that. My fear is that we fix it, then they charge it and they tell us it is going to be another $1500 or so to fix that leak. I guess it is in an area that is a bitch to get to? The labor is what is so expensive.

We definitely will keep the car, though...it will be just fine for winter driving. It needs a paint job but other than that, I love the way it feels, the way it handles. It has enough room. It is so comfortable inside.
11 days ago - Thursday 5/9/19 - 1:16:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
It needs a paint job too?

Cut your losses and buy something similar or just don't use it in the summer heat.

After all who else is going to want to invest in a car with no A/C that needs a paint job?
11 days ago - Thursday 5/9/19 - 1:29:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
The clear coat is peeling. I was going to get it painted before I learned of this A/C problem.

Minivans are fantastic when you have children. Automatic doors, stow and go seating.. they're great and I definitely recommend them.

Is that the Prius C or the regular one?

The only thing about he mini van is the gas mileage. It would be similar to our Durango it seems. But the Durango has 4x4 and is very powerful. I read that the mini van isn't powerful and of course it does not have 4x4. So it sucks that it doesn't have good gas mileage to make up for that.

We got spoiled with the gas mileage in our Prius, that is for sure. And gas prices are going up.

Get a toyota sienna, not some dodge piece of sh*t.

I love Dodge. The Durango is the best. Like I said we have had it since 2008 and the only major repair it has needed was a replacement fuel pump and now this A/C. Otherwise, it is a powerhorse. Running strong as can be still.

I don't think a minivan can be comparable to a Prius for gas mileage, but I think that Chrysler does make a hybrid version of their minivan...
11 days ago - Thursday 5/9/19 - 12:03:49 PM EST (GMT-5)
No it is not comparable. They are vastly different. But I look at the overall benefits of all vehicles considered. Like which is better...much room for car seats and when we go shopping? Also have to consider the stroller. Obviously the minivan is the better choice. But on the other hand, the Prius over time kinds of buys itself in the gas mileage savings (actually calculated this with our last Prius and the car basically bought itself but that was back when gas was really high). But the Prius may not have enough room.

The situation right now is two car seats, one large double stroller, and we often need enough room to carry groceries back. I think the minivan is probably what we are going to have to go with.

Sienna comes in 3.5L V6 with AWD. I mean you don't want to tow a large boat with it, but it's beats pants off my RAV4.

I hear you on the gas mileage. I would love a prius. But it just won't work for us.

And you never know - your kids may make friends and then what happens when you need to lug 3-4 kids around to soccer practice or whatever it is people do with minivans.

Call me a heartless cow, but I'd send them with their own parents.

Minivan sounds like the best bet. Especially since you're hoping to expand your family in the future!
11 days ago - Thursday 5/9/19 - 12:17:38 PM EST (GMT-5)
Depending on the package on your durango the towing capacity could be as low as 3750; 2019 sienna can tow 3500.

Can you tell I really want to ditch our car and buy a sienna? I just don't have the time to deal with it right now.
11 days ago - Thursday 5/9/19 - 12:27:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
I guess you could also go with something inbetween: Highlander comes with 3 rows of seats and extra cargo space, almost 300 hp and tow capacity up to 5000lbs. You just don't get those nice sliding doors.

And honestly in looking at it, I'm not sure the car seats would fit with the drivers seat far enough back for my legs.

See? Two votes for the sienna.

OH WHAT A FEELING

Sure. But then you have to drive to all the things because you can’t carpool.
11 days ago - Thursday 5/9/19 - 12:56:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
lol my after-school program would cease to exist if half the parents didn't carpool.

We used to be a Sienna family, but have gone over to the Dark Side and now own an Odyssey...
